STETHS victory ends Munro dream

first_img LITTLE ATTACK WESTERN BUREAU: Munro College fell just short in their quest for one of the automatic qualifying spots for the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)-FLOW daCosta Cup inter-zone round, as Demar James’ 63rd minute goal gave champions STETHS a 1-0 victory in Malvern yesterday. It was the forward’s sixth goal of the season and it accounted for STETHS’ 24th point in topping the competitive Zone E. Lacovia High’s 16 points were good enough for the second automatic spot, while Munro once again disappointed with 15 points and third. Coming into the do-or-die derby game, Munro showed little intent in attack, primarily in the first half, allowing their nemesis too much time to settle into their rhythm. But a less-than-perfect surface made it difficult for the Omar Wedderburn-coached team to get into more threatening positions in and around the opposition’s 18-yard area. However, it was a more competitive affair in the second half, with Munro showing plenty more urgency in attack. They came close to scoring in the 69th minute when Timor Lewis’ effort was saved at the near post by STETHS goalkeeper Kenroy Wallace. They again threatened after James scored, this time defender Deanjelo Brown was forced to clear off the line for STETHS, as Munro upped the tempo in search of the equaliser, knowing a draw would have taken them into second place in the zone on goal difference over Lacovia. That scenario would have been good enough to make the homesters advance, but the STETHS defenders were resolute. Wendell Downswell, STETHS’ technical director, said that his team can now refocus for the important inter-zone round from which the winners in each group will make the cash-rich FLOW Super Cup. “Now it’s serious business; this is where we usually pick up or game. The players are looking forward to this,” said Downswell.last_img read more
