This is an edited version of the interview.Fifa: With only a week left in the 2010 Fifa World Cup, what are your impression so far of the tournament? Jacob Zuma: I think the tournament is going extremely well and South Africans are happy. You just have to see the reactions of the people at the matches.I must also say that the international community is happy about this tournament. I had an opportunity to be in Toronto at the G8 meeting and there was much excitement among other heads of state. I think we have proved that not only South Africa, but Africa is capable of hosting any major event.When you were in prison on Robben Island, did you imagine that South Africa would host an event of this magnitude, and you would be in charge of the country when it took place?I don’t think any of us imagined that. At that time we were campaigning for the isolation of apartheid South Africa. And when Fifa took a decision to ban South Africa, it was a significant step. We only dreamed that, one day, a free and equal South Africa would participate in international competitions. We never thought that South Africa, so early on, would host a World Cup.In any case, when I was in Robben Island I never thought I would be president. It is indeed a humbling experience.How important was it for South Africa to succeed at this Fifa World Cup, given the scepticism some have shown in its ability to do so?I think it was very important for us to succeed. You must remember that, as South Africans, we pride ourselves on the fact that we always rise up to any challenge. As a matter of fact, nobody believed that we would have a smooth transition from apartheid – but we did it.As you know, a Fifa World Cup has never been hosted in Africa. When South Africa first declared its intentions to host the World Cup, some people said, “What is this country from Africa thinking?”Yes, we lost the first time (to Germany), but we knew we would do it the next time. That is what defines us as a country – our belief that nothing is impossible.When we completed the stadiums, people started to talk about security and other issues, but we have had a great tournament. And today a lot of people who are honest enough have come out and said, “We were wrong about your country.”The tournament has also been seen as an opportunity for nation-building in this young democracy. Do you think that has been achieved?Absolutely, beyond expectations. It has been an important component of our nation-building. This is the first time we have seen this Rainbow Nation really coming together in a manner we have not witnessed before. For the first time, every South African is now flying our national flag. Everybody is just crazy about the tournament, both black and white.Do you think that successfully hosting the 2010 Fifa World Cup will make it easier for the country to win bids to host other international events?We have proved to the world that we are capable of hosting any international event, that we have the resources and infrastructure. People are already talking about the possibility of bidding for major events, such as the Olympics. I don’t see why we can’t bid to host the Olympics in the future. It’s important for Africa.What lessons, as a government, have you learned from hosting the World Cup?There are many. For one, we learned a lot about how to work with strict timelines. We have embarked on a lot of development and we had to work within a tight schedule in order to deliver on time.You are known for your love for football. How many matches have you been able to watch, and which team has impressed you so far?I have watched many games. I think this Fifa World Cup has been different. The football has been so unpredictable. Some of the countries who were favourites are now out of the tournament and the gap between the so-called big teams and other teams is narrowing.Of course, there are countries that have played well. Even though Bafana Bafana did not qualify, I think we played good football. We were so close to qualifying.I have been impressed with the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal and Germany. I think the Germans has reinvented their game: they are playing with so much speed and it’s good to watch them. And the teams from Latin America have been great: Brazil and Argentina are a pleasure to watch. In Africa, we are proud of Ghana – they have represented us well.May we put you in the spot and ask you to predict the team that will win the tournament on 11 July?It’s difficult to say, but I think the winner will be among the teams I have mentioned (laughing).There is a lot of talk about the legacy of the 2010 Fifa World Cup. What legacy would you like it to leave for South Africa’s children?Firstly, the world is aware that Africa has the capacity to host the World Cup. Everybody has seen that we are equal to the task. It has taken our economic development to a new level.One of the important things for Africa is education and programmes like 1Goal are playing a vital role – that is legacy. The tournament has inspired Africans.
18 October 2011The African Infrastructure Investment Fund 2, which focuses on infrastructure equity investments in sub-Saharan Africa, has announced its final close with commitments of US$500-million (approximately R3.6-billion) secured from institutional investors.The fund is promoted and advised by African Infrastructure Investment Managers (AIIM), a joint venture between the infrastructure and real assets business of Australia’s Macquarie Group and South Africa’s Old Mutual Investment Group.The fund, which reached its first close of $320-million in March 2010, targets core infrastructure investments in areas such as roads, airports, power, telecommunications, rail, ports, social infrastructure and other capital-intensive developmental assets.“The strong investor support for [the fund] demonstrates that Africa is climbing up the agenda of investors,” AIIM chief executive Andrew Johnstone said in a statement last week. “We have a strong pipeline of potential opportunities under detailed review, primarily in the transport and energy sectors, and we are pleased that [the fund] has already committed 24% of its capital to investments in the transport sector.“We are now building on the momentum of this successful fund-raising and will look to launch a parallel fund initiative in West Africa.”Macquarie and Old Mutual Investment Group are established infrastructure investors, and fund builds on this experience in Africa.Catalysing infrastructure developmentThe lack of investment in infrastructure is considered one of the more serious impediments to improving the economic growth trajectory of African economies.The fund is expected to catalyse infrastructure investment activities on the continent, by mobilising equity capital, and access to global experience of successfully delivered, sustainable infrastructure assets. Geocachers Roy Joseph (Rojo464) and Paul Fox (Pauleefox) drove through the rugged desert of Eastern Utah searching for five geocaches on Tuesday the 17th of August. But they never made it past their second find. What they encountered instead led to grateful tears and news headlines.Roy and Paul had finished finding their second geocache and were looping around for a third – called “Bugy Softwear” (GCGMJT). The area of the desert that they searched is referred to as the Dolores Triangle. It’s one of the most barren regions of the United States. The average temperature in August bakes the cracked ground at nearly 100 degrees F (38 C). Bumping along in Roy’s jeep the two men stopped. Just head of them, a mini-van sat wedged into the sandy soil.Desert rescuePaul says, “We saw the van in the gully from the road above it. Out here a vehicle in that position is either abandoned or there is somebody in need of help. Either way we needed to check it out.”Roy adds, “When we first saw the car we could tell it was stuck. But it looked odd with the towels over the sun visors. We were concerned with who might be in the van. With it being in such a remote area we knew we had to make sure the occupants could get back to town.”They drove the jeep next to the stranded vehicle. Two women looked out. Roy says, “When we stopped beside the van the daughter said ‘Thank God’ and then started crying.” A mother and daughter had been stranded in the van for two days.Roy Jospesh (Rojo464) and his wife LindaRoy says he’s prepared for geocaching in the desert and they were able to offer immediate help: “I have a backpack I carry with water, snacks, SWAG, a first aid kit, a short rope, and batteries. In the Jeep I carry tools, spare parts, a tow strap, a first aid kit, a fire extinguisher, extra water and some blankets.”This wasn’t his first encounter with someone needing help, but never before has the situation been this dire. “We have helped strangers get unstuck, hauled a bicyclist to the hospital, given water to hikers, but this was different – both these two women could have died.” After the rescue, the mother and daughter will be okay.Paul says the situation is a first for him: “In my 64 years I don’t believe I have ever been in a position to rescue damsels in distress before.”Paul Fox (Pauleefox)Both Paul and Roy have been geocaching for at least three years. As the news broke, the reaction from the geocaching community flooded their email in-boxes. They say comments like Nancy Nagel’s post on the Geocaching.com Facebook page hit home. She said, “I always say that geocachers are the nicest, kindest people! I am so proud!”Roy says, “We, too, have met some really nice people while geocaching but I am really surprised at the number of e-mails I have received from them.”Paul explains geocachers this way: “The geocachers I know and have met are not the type of people that I would be afraid to meet in a dark alley. It is always good to have story to tell that puts geocaching in such a good light. Lots of people just don’t know what it is.”Both say they’re ready for more geocaching. Roy says, “I like being in the great outdoors, the exercise and the places geocaching takes me.”And no matter who or what they encounter, they’ll be prepared. What if you could write a screenplay in any word processing application and have it automatically formatted for FinalDraft? Fountain makes it possible.An example of the Fountain markup (click for larger view)For close to two decades, professional screenwriters had only one option when it came to writing screenplays on a computer — FinalDraft. While there were other competing applications, Final Draft was (and still is) the application of choice within the film and television industry. At the end of the day, a writer is expected to work, present, and revise in-progress projects, as .fdx files — the proprietary file format of Final Draft. While there are some utilities that allow a writer to view or translate this document type into something more universal, there is no other application that allows a writer to fully edit an .fdx file other than Final Draft.Further, there hasn’t been many options for starting a screenplay in another application and migrating it to Final Draft for the review and development cycle. You have to start and finish everything in one application on the same computer (because serializing FinalDraft means locking it to a single computer).I don’t know many writers that work this way anymore.Writing happens everywhere: the park, the metro, while driving (dangerous!), in bed, in the bathroom. The device that facilitates these bursts of inspiration is the smartphone. Often a file starts in a simple text editor, moves to something else, then finally lands in a proper screenplay application. With each one of these transitions, a file type translation has to occur. Formatting and notation can get garbled and a lot of “fix-it” work has to be done, losing valuable writing time.What is needed is a universal mark up language — a set of rules and style of writing that exists independent of any one application or file format.Markup Language for ScreenwritersThis is why Fountain is such an amazing development for screenwriters. It is not an application or file type, it is a markup language: ‘a modern system for annotating a document in a way that is syntactically distinguishable from the text.’ (from Wikipedia)Spend a few hours learning the syntax and you’ll be writing screenplays on anything that can edit text. Download any number of Fountain-based apps and you’ll be good to go.‘Fountain is a simple markup syntax for writing, editing and sharing screenplays in plain, human-readable text. Fountain allows you to work on your screenplay anywhere, on any computer or tablet, using any software that edits text files’. For instance, if you want to write a scene heading for an interior day scene in a living room, you just type it like this: int. living room – day.A fountain browser will display that as: INT. LIVING ROOM – DAYStart an action block just by writing normally below a scene heading. And for a character, just write the name in all caps.For every one of these screenplay elements there are ways to force the interpretation. For instance if you wanted to start a scene heading with something other than INT or EXT. You can type a period (“.”) at the start of the line.Using Fountain to go from Google Docs to FinalDraftFinish Your Work in FinalDraftEven with all these great new tools, many of us will still end up in FinalDraft. Thankfully there is a great app from the developers of Fountain called Highland which easily converts a Fountain screenplay into an FDX file. Highland preserves all your existing formatting and structure as you move from Fountain and into FinalDraft. Hopefully soon, FinalDraft will just do that all by itself.

Channels will not break out of their Saas-Bahu shows.” These are amongst the gems of insider information that Team Anna has relied on to outsmart and outmanoeuvre the government’s much-vaunted media managers.In an era when TV channels are forever ‘Breaking News’, Team Anna has shown great mastery in using the TV camera to communicate its message and keep the heat on the government. Compared with a government that takes several hours, some times days, to communicate its stance, Team Anna has been able to ensure that it sets the news agenda, forcing a desperate government to play catch up.Team Anna formulated its media strategy using the help of some former TV journalists. The likes of Manish Sisodia, who worked with Zee News as a producer, and Shazia Ilmi, who was one of the lead anchors at Star News for several years, help Team Anna get an insider’s perspective on how TV channels run and how to stay on top of the news cycle.Here are some of Team Anna’s Dos and Don’ts when it comes to the media. “Never kick off a major protest on a Sunday or a holiday, that’s when TV channels have a lot of pre-recorded shows and space for live news is limited. Plus, all the big anchors and editors take the day off. Stories get played up more when the top editors are present in the news room.” Sample another, “Unlike the government, do not make the mistake of neglecting Hindi channels and regional media, since most of the audiences are actually watching news in vernacular languages and not in English.”advertisementIn just the same way as editors conduct a news meeting every morning, key members of Team Anna too hold their own media strategy meeting. In this meeting, different ideas are discussed. The team then comes up with catchy headlines, like “Joke Pal not Lok Pal”, headlines that these professionals from their past experience know the media is likely to lap up.Talking points are circulated to members who will be appearing on TV debates or giving print interviews. The instruction is clear, don’t get bogged down by the noise of a TV discussion and regardless of what the anchor asks or the other panellists allege, ensure that what you say does not stray from the key issue of Jan Lokpal and corruption.The strategists also realise the importance of keeping the message fresh to ensure that ‘Breaking News’ is supplied at regular intervals. Letters to the Prime Minister or Sonia Gandhi, or photo opportunities like Anna sitting at Rajghat on Independence Day are part of this strategy. Team Anna has realised the importance of symbolism, which is how Anna’s image in front of Mahatma Gandhi’s samadhi became the defining image this Independence Day, instead of the Prime Minister speaking at Red Fort.Not just is the importance of communicating the right message understood, attempts are also made to ensure that there are no deviations from the central message. When Anna Hazare spoke out in favour of Narendra Modi, the media strategists quickly understood that this comment could end up alienating apolitical supporters and fuel allegations that Anna was the BJP’s B-Team. Very quickly, it was clarified that Anna only praised Modi’s development work and did not condone state-sponsored riots. When allegations were levelled that the RSS was sponsoring Anna’s campaign, attempts were made to rope in faces from the Muslim community to give the movement an inclusive feel.Team Anna has even engaged an external media tracking agency that pores over every line of news carried in newspapers and TV channels. If the team feels the media is drifting from their message, meetings are immediately convened and course correction strategies chalked out.Attempts to leverage the media are not restricted to TV and print, social media too is given a major thrust, which is what explains the large turn-out of youngsters at places like India Gate and Azad Maidan. A dedicated team of volunteers constantly updates India Against Corruption, Facebook pages and Twitter handles, which is how the youth know where to assemble and when. Communication is localised down to every city so that the campaign is not restricted only to Delhi and Mumbai.Compare Team Anna’s cutting edge media strategy with that of the UPA government. For 72 hours after Baba Ramdev was unceremoniously evicted from Ramlila Maidan in the middle of the night, the government made no effort to explain to a horrified nation, what prompted the police’s mid-night crackdown. Even in the case of the PM’s faux pas on Bangladesh in the Editor’s roundtable, it took the PMO more than 30 hours to remove the offending remarks from the PMO website. In the intervening period, serious damage had been done to the government’s image and media consumers had formed their own opinion on the government’s actions.advertisementIn the United States, successive Presidents since John F. Kennedy have turned media management into a fine art. An entire industry of spin doctors thrives and is growing with every passing year. Barack Obama’s successful presidential run in 2008 is often credited to deft handling of mass media and the ability to communicate a message of hope, which resonated with users across all media platforms – TV, print, radio and online.Rattled by a series of PR disasters, the government has now formulated a Group of Ministers on the media, whose job is to communicate the government’s viewpoint to the people in real time. But in comparison with Anna’s message which seems earnest, the government’s spokespersons often come across as being condescending, confrontational and arrogant.At every stage, Anna has shown that he is three steps ahead of the government. When it became clear that the government would arrest Anna Hazare on Tuesday morning, Team Anna recorded a message for the people of India. Government sources dismissed this tactic as being inspired by slain terrorist Osama bin Laden, but the video message helped Anna generate sympathy even amongst fence sitters who did not support his campaign before this. The recording also had a graphic plate with the names of people who would lead the movement in Anna’s absence – a key mass communication strategy to ensure that people know whose voice to listen to.In an era when 24-hour TV is a reality that cannot be wished away, Team Anna has shown how even with limited resources, mass media can be channelised to amplify the message. The government, despite the innumerable resources at its command, still comes across as confused and chooses to blame the media for creating the Anna phenomenon. A classic case of confusing the message with the messenger. No wonder Anna is winning and the government is bound in shackles.
