Proud owners will be sorry to leave this epic Redlynch estate

first_imgNutmeg Grove in RedlynchONE of Redlynch’s most treasured estates is on the market for the first time since it was built more than 20 years ago.Set against rainforest, the 1ha property at 18-20 Woodridge Cl known as Nutmeg Grove is listed for $1.5 million. It has allowed an idyllic Far North lifestyle for Terry and Ingrid Douglas, former Sydneysiders who decided to build a masterpiece in the tropics.“In the winter of 1992 we came up here and lived in a tent while we built the garage,” Mrs Douglas remembered.“We then arrived here again in December 1994. We lived in the garage, it was our first wet season and all we had were fans.“But I just remember the excitement about taking on a new adventure.”The four-bedroom steel-frame house was finished towards the end of 1995.With polished timber floors and ample living space, the “colonial Queenslander” was architecturally planned by the late Sydney designer Chris Chalmers. The sprawling yard is replete with tropical trees, while a swimming pool and gazebo add to the appeal. The property operated as a successful bed and breakfast for many years.More from newsCairns home ticks popular internet search terms3 days agoTen auction results from ‘active’ weekend in Cairns3 days ago“It was very popular. We had to cross days out just so we could take a break occasionally,” Mrs Douglas said. The property is listed for $1.5 millionShe said the home was named after the abundance of native nutmeg trees.Other features of the property include a steel and concrete reinforced cyclone shelter – which can also be used as a home gym – an art studio and a large five-car garage. The property is just a short drive to popular swimming spot Crystal Cascades. Mrs Douglas said the home had been “magnificent”. “It has been the most beautiful place we’ve lived in,” she said.“We had 25 years living on the waterfront, and now we’ve had about 25 years in the rainforest.”She said the property was now too big for just the two of them, and they are now looking to downsize.“I think this is just a perfect home for families, with two or three children,” Mrs Douglas said.
