The New Years Day contest was the Missouri Valley Conference opener for both teams. Drake (7-5, 0-1 MVC) was led offensively by junior Lizzy Wendell’s (Blue Springs, Mo.) 16 points with 14 coming in the fourth quarter. Junior Caitlin Ingle (Runnells, Iowa) was next with 15 points while sophomore Maddy Dean (Jordan, Minn.) had 13 points and freshman Sara Rhine (Eldon, Mo.) had 12 points. SIU (8-5, 0-1 MV) had four players finish in double figures led by Cartaesha Macklin’s 23 points behind an 8-for-8 day at the free throw line. Rishonda Napier scored 20 points, including making four three pointers. Trailing by 13 points after a Salukis’ jumper to begin the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs mounted a massive rally attempt to get within two points. Ingle drove by the SIU defense for a tough layup to make the score 64-62 with 2:05 to play in the game. After forcing a SIU miss, Wendell then had a game-tying layup waved off on a traveling call with 1:37 left as the Salukis were forced to foul. SIU made its free throws down the stretch to hang on for the road win. The first quarter was tightly contested as both teams held leads, but it was SIU who led 19-18 after one quarter. The Salukis extended their advantage to 37-28 at halftime as the Bulldogs struggled to score in the quarter. Drake made just 2-of-13 three-pointers and had several attempts roll out of the basket, going 13-of-46 (28.3 percent) shooting. The Bulldogs bounced back in the final two periods at 47.2 percent from the floor and knocking down 5-of-9 from beyond the arc.
