Jones, Alexander Voted Women’s Outdoor Athletes of the Week

Women’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week – Sarea Alexander, UIW – Jr. – San Antonio, TexasAlexander re-broke both the stadium and program long jump records at the UIW Invitational, finishing first with a leap of 20-09.75. Her jump leads the Southland and ranks third in the West Region. In the triple jump, the junior registered a mark of 42-04.75 – second in the conference and 14th in the region. Honorable Mention: Logan Morton, Central Arkansas; LaShawnda Simmons, UIW. Women’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week – De’Shalyn Jones, Northwestern State – Sr. – Tyler, TexasJones ran a school-record time of 23.04 in the 200m, ranking her second all-time in conference history. She ran the third-fastest Southland time in the 100m (11.78), placing third at the Texas Invitational. In the 200, the senior’s time is 21st in the nation and 14th in the East Region. Jones is first in the conference in the 200, leading the next-fastest time by 0.88 seconds. She also ran a leg in the 4x100m that finished second (46.12). FRISCO, Texas – De’Shalyn Jones of Northwestern State and UIW’s Sarea Alexander are the Southland Conference Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. Southland Athletes of the Week are presented by Jones and Alexander both now have two weekly awards to their names on the season. Jones earned Track Athlete of the Week on April 3while Alexander was tabbed Field Athlete of the Week on March 20. Honorable Mention: Ashley Davis, Southeastern Louisiana; Lonnie Smith, Abilene Christian. Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on at least 25 percent of ballots.last_img
