GSA volleyball falls in semis; local players receive All-PVC selections

first_imgBLUE HILL — The George Stevens Academy volleyball team’s 2019 season came to an end Wednesday with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-21) loss to Calais in the Class C semifinals.No. 2 GSA (13-3) got a strong performance from sophomore Evelyn Dagan, who served 19 of 20 with 15 assists and seven kills. Sophia Biggie-Jennings (seven digs and seven kills) Erika Hipsky (13 of 15 serving, four digs and 11 kills) also contributed in the hard-fought defeat to the third-ranked Devils, who fell to 12-5 on the season with a loss to Woodland in Saturday’s state title game.On Monday, Biggie-Jennings and Dagan were both chosen to the All-Penobscot Valley Conference first team. Ella Hubbard of Ellsworth and Victoria Del Cid of Mount Desert Island were named second-team selections, and Erika Hipsky (GSA), Jocelyn Boudreau (Ellsworth) and Molly Ritter (MDI) received honorable mention.GSA’s co-coaches, Bonnie Marckoon and Aleta Schmidt, were named PVC Coaches of the Year. The Eagles earned their first-ever playoff with their Oct. 26 victory over Machias in the Class C North quarterfinals and saw an overall improvement of seven wins from last season.This is placeholder textThis is placeholder textlast_img
